Tamana Bat Cave
Mount Tamana is the tallest mountain in the Central Range with an altitude of 313 meters. The flat limestone top was once a coral reef and after thousands of years of geological action, led to the formation of an underground Cavern.
The Tamana Bat Cave is home to twelve different species of bats and
has the second largest population in the Caribbean of 1.5 million bats ,the largest being in Mexico .The bats in the cave are mainly insectivores ,
The cave has two noticeable chambers ,the first is parallel to the surface while the second heads deep underground. To get inside the cave one has to crawl through a narrow hole situated at the top entrance.Going inside the cave is optional since you are sure to get your clothes dirty and one may prefer to wait at the top for the migration. .
The hike to the cave is a twenty minutes uphill trek and it takes a further twenty minutes to reach the mountain top.At the summit picturesque views of the Northern and Central Range can be seen through the bushes..
The highlight of the hike is to witness the exodus bats leaving the cave at dusk in a spiral formation. This spectacular event which last for hours seems never ending as thousands of bats exit in search of food .
In the rainy season the trail may be muddy and slippery so bring along the following .1. good shoe with grips 2. extra change of clothing and shoe to be left in vehicle 3. gloves 4. long pants 5. torch- lights 6. repellents 7.extra water to wash hands from guano.Don't forget your camera because you will have lots of pictures to take.
