Tabaquite was once known as the Hub of Central Trinidad this was due to oil and cocoa. Knolly's Tunnel was built in 1892 by Governor Sir Cortenay Knolly mainly to transport cocoa from Central Trinidad to Port of Spain and The West Coast. With the decline of cocoa the government decided to close down the railway and on Monday August 20 1965 after 67 years the last train rolled into Tabaquite..
The Tunnel was refurbished and re-opened to visitors In August 1991 by environment minister Mr.Lincoln Myers .
The construction of the 800acres Navet Dam began in 1959 and was completed in 1962 and expanded in 1966 and 1976. There are two main reservoirs a Upper Dam for storage and filtration and a Lower Dam for drain-offs . After the water is processed it is stored in clear wells for distribution to Southern Districts in Trinidad.
