Shark River

Shark River is located in the Northern Range between the north eastern villages of Matelot and Grand Riviere .It is part of the Mathura National Park an  Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) which includes the watersheds of Rio Seco ,Salybia ,Grand Riviere and Shark River. During high tide the big backlash of salt water at the river's mouth allowed a variety of marine fish to safely wander upstream.Long ago young sharks could be spotted swimming as far up as the bridge, giving it the name Shark River however this no longer exist today.

The area surrounding the bridge with it's crystal clear pools is a popular camping destination on weekends. The natural vegetation of mora forest provides a welcoming habitat  for many endangered species of wildlife such as the pawi and ocelot. On mornings howler monkeys are sometimes sighted swinging in the trees around the camp in search of food.

Further upstream the river remains untouched, there are numerous pools, gorges and waterfalls to be discovered. There is a stunning attraction whereby the river has eroded the landscape with such perfection to carve a vertical wall.Few hikers can boast of visiting this natural phenomenon known as "The Wall" mainly because of its far distance and rugged terrain which includes climbing over giant boulders and waterfalls. This part of the adventure is optional and is recommended for experience hikers only.Once river conditions are favorable, experience hike leader Dan Jaggernaught will lead a selective group of adventurist on the expedition to view this hiker's orgasm called "The Wall".
