Mermaid Pool and Matura Basins
The village of Matura is known for it's conservation of the leatherback turtles and between February and June visitors from all corners of the globe travel there to witness the turtles nesting in the sand.There is however another hidden beauty ,timeless and patient just waiting to be explored to unveil it's true magnificence.The Matura River despite centuries of exploration remains unspoiled by man and still maintains it's dignity.The river bed has eroded the bed and bank of it's channel to form fascinating pools ideal for relaxing and swimming.Some of the delightful spots along it's path are the Mermaid Pool and Manuelot Falls.There are jacuzzi like gorges and even a rock that has the shape of Africa.Visitors will find bliss in the peaceful atmosphere that surrounds the river and the hike to get there takes only 30 minutes .
The trek to the river begins at Thomas Trace ocated just before The Matura Outreach Centre and the walk is mainly through pine forest.During the dry season the area is plagued by bush fires and the pine trees beautify and preserve the forest.The hike down to the river is easy and once you get there you will be captivated by it's grandeur. There seem to be beauty everywhere, the sun shining on the crystal clear waters radiate vibrant colors of emerald green.The trees along the river bank provide adequate shade and add to the splendor of this picturesque landscape. Bathers will be transformed into mermaids as they sit on the rocks soaking their feet in the cool refreshing waters.
