At night the leather back turtle comes ashore to nest on the coastline. The numerous hiking trails lead to breath-taking rivers,mountains and waterfalls, the most popular been “The Paria Trail” starting in Matelot and finishing at Blanchisseuse, Spring Bridge. At the western end of the village lies the river, this area is a popular picnic spot and two miles further upstream the Matelot Falls can be discovered.

The Cedula of Population of 1783 invited French Immigrants to develop the country and set up estates in remote areas. Matelot is french for sailor and before roads were constructed this far-flung area was occupied by seamen. The population today is about six hundred villagers who main sources of income are fishing, hunting ,agriculture and eco-tourism .Matelot local tour guides headed by Wazi will be on hand to assist Island Hikers.
