Island Hikers

Don Mendez sets NorthCoast record of 3hrs and 44mins......On Sat 28th May starting at 6.27am from the sleep village of Matelot ,Island Hikers kicked off their annual hike-a-thon from Matelot to Blanchisseuse .The hike attracted 150 hikers of various fitness levels many of them for the first time enjoying the splendor of the remote North Coast Beaches of Madamas, Garand Tacarib and Paria. . Don Mendez of Trinidad and Tobago Road Runners completed the 19.7 miles rugged coastline  in a record breaking time of 3hrs and 44 mins to gain the title of "King Of The North Coast ".Don said,unlike marathon running where the coarse is even , the trail,hills and coastline can be rigorous and calls for experience in hiking as well as road running,he plans to break  his record next year.Don won a trip to Grenada  Courtesy Caribbean Airlines and a challenge trophy courtesy Simons Music .Second was Curtis Forde 4 hrs.18 mis ,Third Aamon Percy 4hrs 20 mins ,Forth Roger Antoine 4.53 and fifth The Caribbean Hiking Adventures fusion team  of Felix Lamy ,Odilette Jowaheer,Emmanuel Boatswain,Damian Paul ,Rudolph Maynard at 4hrs .56 mins .Group Leader Mario Russell   said " all went well,we are glad to see ,hikers are becoming more health conscious and recognise the importance of exercise.We were able to finish at 5.30pm.".Mario thanked his hikeleaders for a job well done and Ronda Cassie for organization . The event was sponsored by Caribbean Airlines, Blue Waters & Monster,Yoplait Yogurt ,Gatorade,Trophies and Awards LTD, Cameron's Auto Garage ,National Lottery Control Board ,Nature Valley and Simons Music.Special thanks to St Johns Ambulance,Gillian Mendez for massage therapy ,Cleve for Boat Service, Solange and Evolange Yearwood for photography and the hikers at the finish line for support .
