Cumaca Caves
Cumaca is a remote village deep in the Northern Range .To get to Cumaca Village proceed east along the Valencia Road for a mile and a half. The Cumaca Road is situated on the left and heads in a north-eastern direction for approximately nine miles .The slow drive on the half pitched road takes about an hour and a half and along the way you will notice the Turure Bridge ,The Quarry and the Cumaca RC School.
The hike to the Cave takes about one hour and fifteen minutes on an old estate forest trail .The Cumaca or Oropuche Cave has the largest Guarcharo Oil Bird Colony in Trinidad and you will be amazed by its magnificence . In 1911 United States 26th President Theodore Roosevelt visited the cave.
The source of the Oropuche River flows through the cave and once entering the cave be prepared to get wet to your waist level .The cave has three known chambers and to access the second and third you will have to paddle under the rocks .Caution should be taken shinning your torch lights on the birds as this sends them into a frenzy.
On the return journey we will divert from the trail to visit the sulphur springs and take a cool off swim in the Oropuche River. _0.jpg)
